Bongkrekic acid is an inhibitory ligand of the mitochondrial adenine nucleotide translocase (ANT) the inner membrane channel of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore (MPTP). It is a natural toxin when it contaminates food products.
It is a polyunsaturated long-chain fatty acid derivative that acts as a potent inhibitor of ANT. This acid blocks NMDA receptor and prevents PARP cleavage and DEVDase (Caspase-2 like) activity so that it inhibits apoptosis of cerebrocortical neurons.
